Eve McGivern I keep going back and listening to this new disc by Memory Drawings, as it is all kinds of wonderful. Entirely instrumental, it features gorgeous hammered dulcimer and aching violins, and is a blend of ethereal sounds and dreamy orchestral passages with elements of ambient and shoegaze. It keeps hooking me in and drawing me back; this is an incredibly passionately emotive and meditative jewel.

Gordon Thanks yet again to www.acloserlisten.com for pointing me in the direction of this one. Fabulous relaxed grooves, with a similar vibe in places to Le Gros Ballon. The bonus remixes make what is an excellent album even better!

about

The Nearest Exit is the third album from Anglo/American collective Memory Drawings. Led by the hammered dulcimer of Minneapolis-based Joel Hanson, the band also features Richard Adams (Hood / The Declining Winter), Sarah Kemp (Brave Timbers), Chris Cole (Movietone / Manyfingers) and Gareth S Brown (Hood).

Ever since its stripped-down pastoral debut, Music for Another Loss, Memory Drawings' short dulcimer-driven instrumentals have flowered into lengthier, more full-bodied compositions that inadvertently pay homage to the group's musical heroes. This time around, the band consciously set out to make a sprawling record in the spirit of Bark Psychosis' Hex or Slowdive's Pygmalion, abandoning verse-chorus structures in favour of a music that turns slowly and subtly before bringing the listener to more hopeful, redemptive places.

Accompanying The Nearest Exit is a 10-track remix album which functions as a companion piece to the original instrumentals. The band looked far and wide for collaborators and have had their work interpreted by the likes of former The Boats duo The Humblebee Orchestra, Edward Ka-Spel of The Legendary Pink Dots, Bristol’s Manyfingers, ambient-music pioneer Robert Rich, and London-based kraut-pop groups Astronauts and The Leaf Library.
